Shermans Of Yaxley
(SOY) InformationSOY is a group of family history researchers, who met on line in 1994, and who are interested in those who have the surname, or just happen to have one or more ancestors who had the surname SHERMAN, SHEARMAN, SHARMAN, SHEREMAN, etc.
SOY was never intended to be "exclusive" to those with English roots, but rather "inclusive" for all interested researchers. Many immigrants with these or variant spellings have come from numerous countries. We welcome queries and input from any who seek more information about any variant of the name of SHERMAN.
Our focus today is primarily on the post-immigration eras, simply as a matter of the time required to delve back past that.
The name of this group was chosen to honor Thomas SHERMAN of Yaxley, co Suffolk, England, 1422-1493, one of the earliest documented Shermans, even though some of our immigrants came from Dedham, co Essex, England to the New England colonies in the mid-sixteen hundreds, and positive ties to this Thomas remain unproven. Many of us are related through spousal families.
In 1995, Margaret Sherman Lutzvick was the first editor/publisher of a printed newsletter, which was mailed to subscribers. It was packed with news & photos of member "cuz'ens" and articles about their ancestors.
With the February 2002 issue, the printed newsletter was discontinued, and stories and photos are now placed exclusively on this website, and are regularly added to the “Articles index”. All new articles of Sherman research interest can be submitted by contacting Art Cohan. To Shermans in general via the SHERMAN list server on Rootsweb, and the various Message boards. WE COMMUNICATE
